Gröbming is probably the most pleasant little town between Schladming and Liezen. Thanks to the bypass, it isn’t burdened by heavy transit traffic. Moreover, even during the peak winter or summer seasons, it isn’t overrun with skiers and tourists.
At the same time, however, it is pleasantly lively and boasts excellent local amenities – including supermarkets, several cafés, restaurants, banks and a post office. The railway station is situated 3 km from the centre.
Thanks to its location between the Low Tauern ridge and the Dachstein massif, Gröbming offers excellent winter activities and abundant snowfall.
Skiing:
Within a 15 to 30-minute drive, there are five ski resorts, the best known of which is undoubtedly Schladming with its legendary, almost 5-kilometre-long run from the summit of the Planai down into the valley.
- Schladming – Planai / Hauser Kaibling (12 km)
- Tauplitz (25 km)
- Galsterberg (14 km)
- Riesneralm (35 km)
- Planneralm (36 km)
The ski season here kicks off in style – with a spectacular Ski Opening featuring concerts by world-famous music stars and an atmosphere that goes far beyond a typical start to the ski season. The highlight of the season is then the legendary World Cup night slalom, during which Schladming is transformed into one of the most vibrant ski arenas in the Alps.
Cross-country skiing:
You don’t have to go far for cross-country skiing. Right on the western and eastern outskirts of Gröbming, there are cross-country circuits with groomed trails for classic-style skiers and skate-style skiers. In 20 minutes, you can reach one of the best cross-country skiing areas in the world – the Ramsau am Dachstein resort. You can get to Bad Mitterndorf just as quickly, which offers wonderful cross-country trails leading to Ödensee or Pichl-Kainisch.
