The Kaiserwinkl region near the Bavarian border is one of those places that Czech and Slovak visitors have yet to discover.
It lies somewhat off the beaten track of the main access routes to Tyrol's most famous ski resorts and tourist regions, making it all the easier to fall in love with this location for its tranquility and natural beauty.
At the same time, Kaiserwinkl offers great opportunities for sports activities: it is one of the most popular destinations for cross-country skiing, and within a radius of 30 kilometers, you will find four of the most famous ski resorts in Tyrol (Skiwelt, Skicircus, Kitzbühel, St. Johann). On top of that, the adjacent Wilden Kaiser massif is the most visited climbing area in Austria.

Together with Seefeld and Ramsau am Dachstein, the Kaiserwinkl region is one of the three largest and best-known cross-country skiing areas in Austria.
Among the villages of Kössen, Walchsee, Schwendt, and Rettenschöss, there are 250 kilometers of perfectly groomed trails with Tyrolean cross-country skiing quality certification. This extensive network is also connected to neighbouring areas, so avid cross-country skiers can run from Kössen to Kitzbühel, 35 kilometers away.
Right in Kaiserwinkl, you will find several family ski resorts, ideal for recreational skiers, children, and anyone looking for peace and quiet without the crowds.
Directly above Kössen lies the small but pleasant resort of Hochkössen with 10 lifts and 22 kilometers of slopes, suitable for beginners and families with children.
Ski enthusiasts, however, will prefer to take advantage of the fact that Kössen is within easy reach of the four largest ski centers in Tyrol:
Hiking is, of course, is the most classic sport activity in this region, with a dense network of paths both in the valley and along the surrounding ridges. For cycling enthusiasts, there are a number of cycle routes and trails in the area – from easy to challenging.
Another big attraction is Walchsee, one of the warmest Alpine lakes, ideal for swimming, water sports and relaxation. A 30-minute drive will take you to the "Bavarian Sea" – Lake Chiemsee, which will delight you with its extensive shores, swimming areas, and ideal conditions for surfing and kitesurfing.
But Kaiserwinkl is even more of an outdoor paradise for adrenaline lovers. Thanks to its location on the northern edge of the Alps, Kössen is a renowned center for paragliding. The Unterberghorn mountain directly above the village serves as a launch pad for flights with stunning views of the entire Kaiserwinkl and the ridges of the Tyrolean and Bavarian Alps.
The Kaisergebirge massif, a difficult-to-access limestone wall full of towers, walls, and gorges, is the most visited mountaineering area in Austria. Fans of via ferrata will also find something to enjoy here.
