Authorities warn against travel to and from Austria. Dangerous thunderstorms with heavy rain, snow and thunderstorms can be expected on the weekend of September 14-15.
Due to the extreme weather, Austrian Federal Railways has issued a warning in which all passengers are asked to postpone essential train journeys between Friday and Sunday. Already reserved tickets remain valid until September 18, or will be refunded to passengers.
The railway line between Bad Hofgastein and Bad Gastein in Salzburg was closed on the night of Thursday to Friday (September 13) due to heavy snowfall. Several roads in Austria were blocked due to fallen trees or broken down vehicles. Many other roads, such as the Großglockner Hochalpenstrasse, were closed for safety reasons. Snow chains were required in some areas.
Fortunately, no major damage caused by the storm was reported in Austria until Saturday evening (September 14), and according to the reports of the local hydrometeorological institute, no significant damage caused by high water is expected along the rivers.
A large part of the precipitation on the upper courses of the rivers fell in the form of snow, which in some parts of the Austrian and Bavarian Alps fell to more than 110 centimeters. The precipitation load of the last few days will thus be carried away by the rivers over a longer period of time - as the snow will gradually melt in positions between 1 000 and 2 000 meters above sea level.
At the same time, the Austrian press appreciates the significantly better preparedness of rescue services and residents compared to previous extreme floods.
